How to Obtain Permanent Residency (PR) in Japan

Permanent Residency (PR) in Japan allows foreigners to live indefinitely in Japan without the need to renew their visa. It provides greater flexibility in employment, travel, and lifestyle.


Eligibility Criteria for PR in Japan

1. Minimum Stay Duration

To apply for PR, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • 10 years of continuous stay in Japan (with at least 5 years on a work visa).
  • 3 years of stay if you hold a Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) Visa with at least 70 points at the time of application.
  • 1 year of stay if you have an HSP Visa with 80+ points at the time of application.
  • 3 years of stay if married to a Japanese national or permanent resident.

2. Good Conduct & Social Contribution

  • No criminal record (including unpaid traffic fines).
  • Compliance with tax payments, pension, and insurance contributions.

3. Financial Stability

  • A stable job and income (typically, an annual salary of ¥3–¥4 million is expected).
  • Proper financial management and no outstanding debts.

4. Recommendation from Immigration Office

  • Must be recognized as beneficial to Japan (such as contributing to the economy, research, or social welfare).

Application Process

  1. Prepare Required Documents

    • Application Form (available from the Immigration Bureau).
    • Residence Card (Zairyu Card) and Passport.
    • Proof of Income (Tax certificates, salary slips, or bank statements).
    • Certificate of Good Conduct (No criminal record and proof of paying taxes, insurance, and pension).
    • Recommendation Letter (if required).
  2. Submit Application

    • Apply at the Immigration Bureau of Japan in your area.
    • Pay the application fee.
  3. Wait for Approval

    • The processing time is 4 to 12 months.
    • If approved, you will receive a Permanent Resident Card.
